Meet Marcelo
Marcelo Llorente was first elected in 2002 by the residents of District 116 to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. He was subsequently reelected in 2004, 2006, and 2008.
Since taking office, Representative Llorente has been a strong advocate for Florida ’s elderly, persons with developmental disorders, and students. Each year he issues Budget requests to provide additional state funding for social activities for senior citizens. In 2009, he passed legislation into Florida law mandating the creation of a statewide prescription drug monitoring database aimed at curbing the state’s flourishing prescription drug black market. In 2007, he also passed legislation for mandating random testing for steroids use amongst student athletes in high schools. Representative Llorente currently serves as the Chair for the Policy Council and is also a member of the Rules and Calendar Council. Throughout his terms in office he has served as Co-Chair on the House Appropriations Council on Government and Health Care and as Vice Chair of the Joint Legislative Budget Commission. He has also been a member of the Government Accountability Act Council; Policy Council; Rules and Calendar Council; Committee on Affordable Healthcare; Insurance Regulation Committee; Transportation & Economic Development Appropriations Committee; Education Innovation & Career Preparation Committee; the Safety & Security Council; and was chosen to participate in Governor Charlie Crist’s Task Force on Autism Spectrum Disorders in 2008.
Representative Llorente was born in 1977 in Miami, Florida. As the son of Cuban immigrants and the eldest of four boys, Representative Llorente learned the importance of family values and hard work while developing leadership skills that have proven beneficial in all aspects of his life. Upon graduation from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, he attended Tulane University where he was a member of the varsity baseball team and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 1998. Representative Llorente then earned his law degree from The Florida State University College of Law in 2001.
Representative Llorente is an attorney. He has been practicing with the law firm of Bryant Miller & Olive, P.A. since 2001, where he specializes in the areas of Real Property, Public Finance, and Local Government. In 2005, Representative Llorente was appointed to the board of directors of Pacer Health Corporation, a Miami-based owner-operator of acute care hospitals, medical treatment centers and residential care facilities. He is currently a Member of the Florida Bar, the American Bar Association and the Cuban American Bar Association. Representative Llorente was an active contributor to the successful campaigns of U.S. Senator Mel Martinez in 2004 and Florida Governor Charlie Crist in 2006. In February 2008, he was designated as a Florida delegate to the 2008 Republican National Convention by U.S. Senator and Presidential Candidate John McCain. He resides in Miami-Dade County with his wife Cristina, his daughter Isabella, and his son Marcelo.
